NIA supports Lagos with motor insurance verification devices

Nigerian Insurers Association has provided some electronic devices to the Lagos State Government to support the state in ensuring that motorists obtain genuine vehicle insurance.

The Chairman, NIA, Mr. Gus Wiggle, who led a delegation from the association to the Ministry of
Transport, made the presentation of the devices known as Nigerian Insurance Industry Database to the state.

Wiggle, who observed that Lagos had been doing a lot to ensure safety on its roads, said it was ready to augment the state’s effort in this regard.

“To make the job easier for the law enforcement agencies, we are pleased to present 100 devices that would help the state to be able to verify genuine motor insurance among drivers,” he said.

Wiggle said the NIA would soon organise a training programme for vehicle inspection officers in the state.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Mr. Sewedo Whenu, who received the devices in his office, described the partnership as a welcome development which is in line with government’s effort to ensure discipline and safety in the environment.

He said the devices would complement those being used by the Lagos VIOs to ensure that vehicles that operate on the roads have adequate insurance such that in the event of accident, there would be compensation for victims.

“What we want is a safe environment for all the citizens. We want to assure you that we will make judicious use of the facility to ensure that we achieve a safer and protected transport system in the state,” he said.

The Director, Vehicle Inspection Service, Abdulhafis Toriola, said the partnership was long expected and expressed happiness that it eventually came to pass.
